Developed in France, the hybrid sweet pepper variety ‘Salana’ F1 stands out for its compact yet vigorous growth habit and reliable disease resistance. It is an excellent choice for gardeners looking for a change from traditional red or yellow varieties – ‘Salana’ produces uniform-sized fruits with a unique creamy white color.
The mature peppers are remarkably thick-walled and weigh an average of 180 to 210 grams. The fleshy and crunchy texture makes these fruits a great choice for fresh consumption, as well as for adding to various dishes or preserving. Thanks to the plant’s strong and compact structure, the variety is well-suited for both open ground and greenhouses, taking up less space while still providing a bountiful harvest throughout the season. The package contains 6 seeds.
Usage and Cultivation Instructions:
-
Sowing time and pre-cultivation: Since peppers have a long development period, seeds must be started indoors from February to April.
-
Sowing depth: Sow seeds at a depth of 0.5–1 cm in slightly moist seed-starting soil.
-
Location and planting: Prefers a sunny and warm growing environment. Young plants can be planted in a heated greenhouse in April-May. In an unheated greenhouse or open ground, plant only after the late spring frosts have completely passed (late May or June).
-
Planting scheme: To ensure sufficient light and air circulation, leave a row spacing of 70 cm and a plant spacing of 30 cm within the row.
-
Harvesting: The juicy fruits ripen gradually from July to September.
Tips and recommendations:
-
Pepper seeds germinate quite slowly and require warmth (optimally 25–28 °C). Keep the seed trays warm and cover them with glass or plastic to maintain moisture, removing the cover immediately after seedlings emerge.
-
To increase overall yield, it is recommended to pinch off the first flower (the so-called crown flower) that appears at the plant’s first branching point. This trick directs the plant’s energy into developing a stronger root system and larger leaf mass.
-
Although ‘Salana’ has a compact growth habit, the nearly 200-gram fruits can bend branches with their weight. For safety, provide the plants with proper support early on (e.g., bamboo stakes or special support netting).
