‘Kornett’ is a reliable and mid-early beetroot variety, with a vegetation period lasting 70–85 days from emergence. The variety produces fruits with a regular round shape and intense dark red flesh, which stand out for their good flavor and wide range of uses.
Due to its optimal growth period, ‘Kornett’ is suitable for fresh consumption and canning in summer, as well as for autumn harvesting with the aim of storing the root vegetables in a cellar over winter. To obtain beets with a strong root system and beautiful shape, this variety prefers to grow in medium-heavy, deeply dug sandy loam or loamy sand soil with a neutral reaction (non-acidic).
Usage and Cultivation Instructions:
-
Sowing time: Direct sowing in open ground from late April to early June, once the soil has dried and warmed slightly.
-
Location: An open and sunny location, which ensures better coloring and sugar accumulation in the root vegetables.
-
Sowing depth: 2–3 cm.
-
Spacing: Sow seeds in rows, leaving 25 cm between rows. After emergence, thin the plants so that the distance between them in the row is approximately 10 cm.
-
Harvesting: From July to September (also in October for summer sowing).
Tips and recommendations:
-
Beet seed clusters are aggregate fruits containing several seeds, which is why 2–3 plants often emerge from a single “seed.” Timely thinning is critical to obtain strong and round root vegetables.
-
Avoid fertilizing the bed with fresh manure, as this promotes splitting of the root vegetables and the massive development of thin lateral roots.
-
Beets intended for winter storage must be harvested before the arrival of persistent night frosts – frosted beets store very poorly in the cellar and tend to rot.
