‘Fruidor’ is a reliable and high-yielding variety of yellow French bean, perfectly suited for open-ground cultivation in the local climate. It is a low-growing bush bean with plants reaching a height of approximately 45 cm. The compact growth habit means the plants are self-supporting and do not require additional supports or specialized climbing nets, simplifying bed maintenance and saving time.
The primary advantage of this variety is the high quality of its pods. ‘Fruidor’ produces 12–13 cm long, uniformly shaped, tender golden-yellow pods that lack the woody fibers characteristic of many beans. This makes kitchen processing of the harvested crop quick and convenient. The harvest is fleshy and flavorful, well-suited for fresh boiling, frying, salads, as well as canning or freezing for winter.
Usage and Cultivation Instructions:
Sowing time: Perform direct sowing in open ground only in May or early June. The soil must have warmed to at least +10…+12 °C. French beans are extremely sensitive to night frosts; therefore, do not rush sowing before the arrival of frost-free spring weather.
Location: Choose a warm, sunny spot protected from winds. The soil should be light, rich in humus, and have good water permeability.
Sowing depth: 3–4 cm.
Spacing: The sowing scheme is 20 x 30 cm. Sow seeds in rows, leaving 20 cm between seeds and 30–40 cm between rows. This ensures sufficient light and air for each plant, reducing the risk of fungal diseases.
Maintenance: Keep the bed weed-free and water the plants regularly during dry periods, especially carefully during flowering and pod formation.
Harvesting: Harvest pods regularly in the second half of summer once they have reached their variety-specific length of 12–13 cm. Continuous picking encourages the plant to produce new flowers and pods.
Tips and recommendations:
Cover the newly sown bed with garden fleece. The fleece maintains moisture and warmth in the soil, promoting faster germination, and protects young emerging plants from unexpected cold nights.
Soak the seeds in room-temperature water for about 1–2 hours before sowing. This softens the seed coat and significantly accelerates emergence.
French bean is a legume that fixes nitrogen from the air, thereby enriching the soil. Do not add fresh manure or excessive nitrogen fertilizer to the bed; otherwise, the plant will grow abundant foliage, but the pod yield will be lower.
