White mustard – Your garden’s natural healer and fertilizer
Would you like to improve your garden’s soil structure without chemical fertilizers? White mustard is one of the most beneficial cover crops, offering a solution to several problems at once. This fast-growing plant is not only a remarkably beautiful honey plant but also works deep within the soil like a “natural plow.”
Why choose white mustard as green manure?
-
Effective soil improver: Thanks to its deep-penetrating root system, mustard binds nutrients from the lower layers and brings them up, making the soil friable and rich in humus.
-
Natural pest control: The glucosinolates contained in white mustard inhibit the spread of soil pathogens and pests, reducing the need for pesticides.
-
The bane of weeds: Mustard grows quickly and covers the ground with dense foliage, suffocating unwanted weeds right from the start.
-
Friend to bees: An excellent honey plant with honey productivity reaching up to 100 kg/ha.
Usage and sowing
White mustard is best sown immediately after harvesting the main crop (e.g., potatoes, strawberries, or peas).
-
Sowing rate: 150-200g per 100 m².
-
Sowing depth: 2-2.5 cm.
-
Tip: Denser sowing ensures greater biomass, which makes for an ideal green manure when dug into the soil in autumn.
