Crimson clover is a fast-growing annual plant valued for both its striking appearance and practical properties. Unlike many other clover species, this variety stands out with its elongated and bright crimson flower heads, growing to a height of 40–100 cm depending on conditions. This makes it an excellent choice for flower meadows or simply for diversifying your garden.
In addition to its beauty, crimson clover is an indispensable aid in improving soil health. As a legume, the plant fixes atmospheric nitrogen through rhizobia living in its root nodules, enriching the soil in a completely natural way. When grown as a cover crop, clover successfully helps suppress weeds, reduces soil-borne pathogens, and improves the overall structure and fertility of the land. It is also a very good honey plant, attracting plenty of pollinators to the garden, including bees and butterflies.
Usage and Cultivation Instructions:
-
Sowing time and purpose: If you wish to enjoy the floral beauty and grow the plant for pollinators (as a honey plant), sow in spring, preferably in May. If you use clover as a cover crop to improve soil after the main crop harvest, sow the seeds in August or September (with late sowing, the plant will not have time to bloom before winter).
-
Application rate: This 300-gram package is sufficient for sowing an area of approximately 200 m².
-
Sowing: Sow the seeds evenly on prepared and weed-free soil and rake lightly into the ground.
Tips and recommendations:
-
Mix crimson clover seeds with other annual meadow flower seeds to create a species-rich and visually eye-catching wild flower meadow in a corner of your garden.
-
If you grow clover purely as green manure (to enrich the soil), dig the green mass into the soil in autumn before it becomes woody or in early spring – this way the organic matter decomposes faster and releases nitrogen for subsequent crops.
