The spiral tomato support (height 1.8 meters) is a durable and practical tool for greenhouses or open fields, specifically designed to support tall-growing tomato varieties. Unlike straight support stakes or hanging twine, the spiral design provides independent support for the plant. The growing tomato plant leans naturally along the coils of the spiral, significantly reducing the gardener’s effort in constantly tying and fixing the stems.
The sturdy construction can carry heavy fruit clusters, preventing plants from sagging and stems from breaking. Thanks to the spiral shape, tomato plants are better spread out – this improves air circulation within the foliage and reduces the risk of common fungal diseases (e.g., late blight). Additionally, sunlight reaches the fruit more effectively. With the plant permanently in place and airily supported, removing side shoots and picking ripe tomatoes is quick and convenient.
Usage and Cultivation Instructions:
-
Press the straight bottom end of the spiral support firmly into the ground (at least 20–30 cm deep) as close to the plant as possible. It is best to install the support during planting to avoid damaging the root system later.
-
When the young tomato plant begins to grow taller, carefully guide the main stem between the lower coils of the spiral.
-
As the plant continues to grow, check once a week that the top remains inside the spiral. If necessary, gently guide the top into the correct coil by hand.
Tips and recommendations:
-
If you are growing very heavy-fruited or particularly lush varieties, it is recommended to tie the upper end of the spiral to the greenhouse ceiling frame with strong twine for additional support to prevent the support from tilting in the soil.
-
At the end of the season, wash the supports clean of soil and disinfect them lightly (for example, with a green soap solution). This destroys potential plant disease spores and ensures a safe start for the next gardening year.
-
Although designed for tomatoes, the 1.8 m spiral support is also excellent for supporting cucumbers, garden beans, clematis, and other climbing annuals.
