The 5 kg bulk pack of rye is intended for larger garden plots, potato fields, or farms that need to cover more extensive areas at once. This Estonian winter cover crop is an indispensable aid in mitigating the consequences of intensive cultivation. It helps restore soil fertility and structure in areas that have intensively yielded vegetable or root crops during the summer.

Growing rye as a cover crop is a pure organic gardening practice. It produces a tremendous amount of above-ground biomass, which acts as a living mulch, protecting the soil surface from the destructive effects of wind and heavy rains. The plant’s special root exudates neutralize the germination capacity of weed seeds, keeping the field naturally clean. At the same time, it binds nitrogen present in the soil, which would otherwise be lost, and returns it as organic fertilizer to new plants when it decomposes in the spring.

Usage and Cultivation Instructions:

  • Sowing Time: Direct sowing into the ground in August or September, after the main crop (e.g., potatoes or onions) has been harvested.

  • Sowing Method: Direct sowing in open ground. For larger areas, a seed drill can be used, or an even broadcast sowing can be done by hand. After sowing, harrow or lightly cultivate with a rototiller.

  • Sowing Depth: 2–3 cm, depending on soil moisture (slightly deeper in drier soil).

  • Application Rate: 5 kg of seeds optimally covers an area of approximately 200–250 m².

  • Growing Location: Undemanding regarding soil, suitable for all soil types.

  • Harvest (Incorporation into Soil): In April-May of the following year, when the plant is actively growing but has not yet gone to seed. Plow or rototill the entire mass into the soil at least 2 weeks before new planting.

Tips and Recommendations:

  • Due to the large biomass, digging in the green mass from a 5 kg rye sowing with a spade in spring is physically demanding – the most convenient and fastest way to mix it into the soil is to use a rototiller.

  • Avoid sowing rye too late (in October). The plant must establish a strong root system before permanent frosts arrive to ensure successful overwintering and a quick start in early spring.
