This larger, 1 kg pack of annual crimson clover is ideal for dedicated gardeners or smallholders looking to cover more ground. Highly valued as a natural green manure and soil improver, this pale-crimson-flowered clover features deep-penetrating roots that work with nitrogen-fixing nodule bacteria to capture atmospheric nitrogen and channel it directly into the soil—reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers.
Typically growing 40–100 cm tall, the plant not only enriches the soil but also vigorously suppresses weeds and helps cleanse the ground of harmful pathogens. The striking, deep red color of its long summer blooms offers more than just visual appeal—it acts as a true magnet for beneficial insects. Producing abundant nectar, it serves as a valuable forage plant for honeybees, actively supporting and sustaining local biodiversity.
Usage and Growing Instructions:
-
Sowing time: For ornamental use and attracting pollinators, sow in May. When grown as green manure to revitalize the soil, sow immediately after harvesting early vegetables or main crops (August–September). Autumn sowings develop robust root systems and lush green foliage, but will not flower.
-
Application rate: 1 kg of seed covers approximately 660 m².
-
Growing conditions: Prefers full sun, though tolerates light partial shade. Adaptable to various soil types.
Tips and recommendations:
-
For optimal germination, sow seeds into moist soil or time your sowing just before rain. During dry spring periods, emerging seedlings definitely require additional watering.
-
When grown as a cover crop, mow down the green biomass just as the first flower buds begin to show color—this is when nutrient content peaks and stems remain tender enough to break down rapidly in the soil.
